At the start of the global pandemic last year, Americans found a new level of respect and admiration for essential workers. People started being kinder to grocery store employees and clapping for healthcare workers, showing solidarity and support during a difficult time.
Americans also (though maybe not as vocally) started to recognize the important work that farmers do. As food became harder to come by in the early days of lockdown, it gave consumers a new perspective on everything that farmers do to put food on tables around the country.
In fact, according to Growing Produce, while agriculture has typically been one of the top-rated industries, the general population’s view of it increased by 11% last August, bumping it into the top spot for 2020.
What Does This Mean for the Farming Industry Going Forward?
It remains to be seen whether this increased appreciation for farmers will continue once life is largely back to normal. However, there’s reason for optimism. As the Growing Produce article states:
“Many are discovering — or rediscovering — how much easier and more economical it is to eat healthy at home. More than that, people want to absolutely trust the source. They trust themselves in the preparation, and they trust you [farmers] in the provision.”
This means that growers should expect to see increased demand over the coming years.
As a result, farmers should plan to take greater care in shading crops and animals to help provide the highest yield possible to meet the higher demand from consumers. Americans are going to want high-quality, safe food on their tables and the more growers can meet that demand, the more likely it is that appreciation for farmers and their hard work will continue, even when the pandemic is in the rearview mirror.
